One-way rentals — picking up a car at one location and returning it at another — are a common question for USVI travelers. Here is what you need to know about one-way rentals with Alamo, Enterprise, and National on St. Thomas and St. John.
One-Way Rentals Within St. Thomas
On St. Thomas, one-way rentals are generally not available. All three brands — Alamo, Enterprise, and National — operate from a single rental facility at Cyril E. King Airport (STT). There are no other rental locations on St. Thomas where you can drop off a vehicle.
One-Way Rentals to St. John
There are no rental car facilities on St. John. All rentals originate at STT on St. Thomas. You cannot do a one-way rental from St. Thomas to St. John. If you take a rental car to St. John via the car ferry, you must return it to the STT facility on St. Thomas.
Inter-Island Rentals
One-way rentals between St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John are not available. Each island's rental operations are independent. If you need a car on St. Croix, you would need to rent from a facility there.
Round-Trip Is the Standard
All rentals at STT are round-trip. You pick up and return to the same facility at Cyril E. King Airport. Plan your itinerary accordingly, ensuring you return to STT by your agreed return time.
Planning Your St. John Trip
If you want to visit St. John, you have two options:
- Take your rental car on the car ferry: All rental vehicles from Alamo, Enterprise, and National are authorized for St. John travel
- Take the passenger ferry: Leave your rental car parked at Red Hook and take the passenger ferry to St. John, then use taxis on St. John
Why No One-Way Rentals?
The USVI is a small territory with limited rental infrastructure. Maintaining vehicles across multiple islands would be logistically complex and costly. The single-facility model at STT keeps operations efficient and keeps rental costs lower for consumers.
