Quick answer

To rent a car in St. Thomas, fly into Cyril E. King Airport (STT), take the shuttle to the rental facility, and pick up your vehicle from Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Alamo Rent A Car, or National Car Rental. You need a valid license, a credit card, and you must meet the minimum age. Reserve early — availability is limited, especially during peak season.

Choosing a rental brand

Three brands operate at Cyril E. King Airport: Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Alamo Rent A Car, and National Car Rental. All three share the same rental facility and shuttle service, but they differ in positioning, loyalty programs, and target travelers.

Enterprise is known for reliable service and a broad fleet — a good all-around choice. Alamo focuses on value and leisure travelers — often the most budget-friendly option. National targets business and frequent travelers with its Emerald Club program and premium positioning.

For a detailed comparison, see our brand comparison guide and our best rental options guide.

Choosing the right vehicle

St. Thomas has steep, narrow, winding roads. The vehicle you choose affects your comfort, safety, and ability to explore. Here is a quick overview — follow the links for detailed guides:

  • Economy cars — budget-friendly, fuel-efficient, best for solo travelers and couples on paved roads.
  • Compact cars — a step up from economy, more comfort and luggage space.
  • Intermediate cars — balanced size, comfort, and price for small families.
  • Full-size cars — generous interior and trunk space for families of four or five.
  • Premium vehicles — upgraded comfort and features for business and special occasions.
  • Luxury vehicles — the top tier, limited availability, for executive travel and celebrations.
  • SUVs — versatile, higher clearance, popular with families and groups.
  • Jeep Wranglers — open-air island exploration, popular but limited availability.
  • Minivans — 7-8 passengers, ideal for families and small groups.
  • Passenger vans — 12-15 passengers, for large groups.

Airport pickup at Cyril E. King Airport (STT)

The rental car facility at Cyril E. King Airport is off-terminal — a short shuttle ride from the airport terminal. After collecting your luggage, follow signs to the rental car shuttle pickup area. The complimentary shuttle runs regularly and takes just a few minutes.

At the rental facility, proceed to your brand's counter (Enterprise, Alamo, or National). Present your driver's license, credit card, and reservation confirmation. The agent will process your rental, place a security hold on your credit card, and direct you to your vehicle.

For detailed instructions, see our airport car rental guide, our airport pickup guide, and our shuttle guide.

Driving in St. Thomas

St. Thomas drives on the left — the most important thing to know before getting behind the wheel. The vehicles are standard left-hand-drive (steering wheel on the left), which can be disorienting. Read our left-side driving guide and our full driving guide before setting out.

Key driving tips: stay left, use turn signals, take roundabouts counterclockwise, be cautious on blind curves and steep grades, and watch for pedestrians. Parking in Charlotte Amalie is tight — see our parking guide. Popular destinations include Magens Bay and Red Hook (ferry to St. John).

Payment and insurance

All three brands at STT require a credit card for payment — debit cards and cash are generally not accepted. A security hold is placed on your card at pickup and released after return. See our payment requirements guide for details.

Insurance options include CDW/LDW, liability, personal accident, and personal effects coverage. Your credit card or personal auto insurance may provide some coverage — verify before declining. See our insurance guide for a detailed breakdown.

Driver requirements include a valid license, minimum age (typically 21 or 25), and meeting the credit card requirement. See our driver requirements guide for details.

Taking your rental to St. John

If you plan to visit St. John, you can take the passenger ferry from Red Hook (leaving your rental car in St. Thomas) or the car ferry (taking your vehicle). All rental vehicles from Enterprise, Alamo, and National are authorized for St. John travel. See our St. John ferry guide and our rental car to St. John guide for full details.

Returning your rental car

To return your vehicle, drive back to the rental facility at Cyril E. King Airport. Follow signs for the rental car return area. The return process includes a vehicle inspection, fuel check, and final paperwork. After returning, take the shuttle back to the airport terminal. See our return guide for details, including after-hours returns.
